Feldenkrais Method

"I came to see Stephanie for help with my posture so that I would look better. She ended up eliminating my migraine headaches, chronic low back pain, ringing in my left ear (tinnitus) and TMD (temporo-mandibular disorder), as well as helping me look better. I now refer my TMD patients to her."

An individualized one-on-one approach that gently facilitates changes in the body. This gentle hands-on manipulation is a form of neuromuscular reeducation which is effective in eliminating pain and discomfort related to postural imbalances, stress and common injuries. The method is named after the Israeli scientist Moshe Feldenkrais, D. Sc. While playing soccer, a serious injury to his knee left him disabled. He was unwilling to undergo surgery which could not guarantee improvement. His determination to improve his function and comfort led him into an exploration of anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology. Combining this with his expertise in mechanics, physics, electrical engineering and martial arts he restored most of his mobility and function. He went on to explore human development and ultimately developed the Feldenkrais Method®. Prior to his death in 1984, Dr. Feldenkrais trained thousands in his method internationally. Presently, the Feldenkrais Method® is used throughout the world to decrease stress and increase postural awareness, lessen the effects of illness, rehabilitate injuries, and assist disabled children through developmental milestones. Yet the Method is widely used for skill enhancement, being sought out by musicians, athletes, and dancers.

There are two formats in the Feldenkrais Method®, group and individualized lessons. The group format is called Awareness Through Movement® lessons. Students usually participate while lying on the floor or sitting in chairs. They are verbally guided through a series of small movement patterns developed to bring greater efficiency and flexibility. Movements explored are based on over 1,000 lessons developed by Dr. Feldenkrais. Participation in these lessons helps individuals to find the ease and comfort of movement that we were all born with. Individuals learn about their bodies and about how their habitual movement patterns are often contributing to increasing discomfort and poor posture. Functional Integration® is the name of the individualized one on one sessions. In this format the practitioner communicates to the client through gentle touch and a series of precise movements while lying on a treatment table. Through this subtle yet direct communication with the nervous system significant change occurs. Individuals often feel an increased sense of balance, coordination, and vitality while feeling less pain and more overall flexibility. The sessions are always individualized to meet the needs of each client and therefore very effective. Unlike many traditional therapies, exercises, and medical treatments this method works with the body's natural desire to heal and achieve a balanced state of health, and does not impose on or force the body. Changes are then integrated into the body leading to lasting results. Learning occurs and continues to encourage health and a balanced state.
